The Experience
A volcanic island across the bay
Formed millions of years ago when Madagascar separated from India, St. Mary's Island is one of only four geological monuments in Karnataka. The island is entirely unpopulated and uncommercialized, offering a raw, elemental experience of the Arabian Sea.
The journey itself is part of the charm—a 15-minute ferry ride from Malpe Harbour gives you a panoramic view of the coastline. Once there, you can spend hours walking across the geometric columns, collecting unique shells (though please leave them behind), and watching the waves crash against the black rock.
⚠ Good to Know
- Ferry does not operate during monsoon (Jun–Sep)
- No food, water, or shade available on the island
- Wear sturdy footwear — rocks are sharp and uneven
- Carrying shells off the island is illegal
