The rhythm of the coast
The Malpe Fishing Harbour is one of the largest and most active fishing ports in Karnataka. To truly experience it, you have to wake up before the sun. By 6 AM, the harbor is a theater of sensory overload: hundreds of colorful trawlers unloading their night's catch, the loud, fast-paced rhythm of the auctioneers, and the sheer scale of the fishing industry on display.
A short walk from the main auction area takes you to the boat-building yards. Here, you can watch craftsmen building and repairing massive wooden fishing vessels using techniques that have been passed down through generations. It's a raw, unpolished, and fascinating look into the livelihood of the coastal community.
